Public Biography

Pam has been a Kansas resident since she moved to Lawrence from Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1983 to attend the University of Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1987 with a degree in French and married her husband of 32 years, John McDermott, in 1989.  They have 5 adult children and 6 grandchildren. In 1992 she and her husband started Morning Star Church, a non-denominational church in Lawrence which is also home to Called to Greatness Campus Ministries.  From this initial work, there have been several other churches and campus ministries planted in Manhattan, Kansas City, Topeka, and at Fort Scott Community College. Pam homeschooled all 5 of her children into junior high school and is currently homeschooling her 12 year old granddaughter.

She works full-time at Morning Star Church as Community Life Director.  She has been active in the Lawrence community in several different volunteer capacities over the years.  She and her husband have also been foster parents to teenage boys for several years. Although she has not been consistently politically active, she decided to run for County Commissioner last year and in the process knocked on a few thousand doors to listen to people and learn what they cared about.  She lost the election but realized there are lots of likeminded people in the Lawrence community. In her free time, she likes to read, spend time with family, start new projects and look forward to a beach vacation.
